Muppane Rajamaha Viharaya (Viharmulla Temple)

Muppane Rajamaha Vihara in the Moneragala Divisional Secretariat Division of the Monaragala District is also known as Viharamulla Vihara. It could be reached by taking the bus to Wadikumbura  from Monaragala. The temple built in the early Kandy period is confirmed by the paintings and the sculptures of the same period found adorning the temple building. It is externally 33feet in length and 20 feet in width. It is a two storied structure with the inner chamber is 15feet in length and 9feet in width. The supporting structure of the external chamber is decorated with paintings of the infernal region, human figures, ornamental creeper designs and the section of a procession. In addition   a makara torana, deities and a Buddha statue of the Samadhi posture are sculptured. Some images vandalized by treasure hunters, restored by the Archaeological Department are found in the precinct of the temple.
